36 Days of Type

graphic design

overview

36 Days of Type is a project that invites designers, illustrators and graphic artists to express their particular interpretation of the letters and numbers of the Latin alphabet. This yearly open call challenges participants to design a letter or number each day for 36 consecutive days, sharing our outcomes simultaneously.

I participated for three consecutive years. As I am very interested in the study of visualising sound, as well as the graphic design aesthetics from 1950s–1970s, I set myself a theme to each year focus on a different music genre and their representative record cover styles. Jazz in 2021, funk in 2022 and psychedelia in 2023.

My research through making broadened my understanding of the historical and cultural reasons behind the given aesthetic and what elements visually communicate a jazzy, funky or psychedelic tone. Complimentary to the series, I created Spotify playlists with all the inspiring tracks. Feel free to listen along: Jazzy 2021, Funky 2022, Psychedelic 2023.
